A Brief Guide to Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy consists of two words psyche and therapy. Psyche means 'mind' or 'soul' and therapy means 'healing'. So psychotherapy is about healing the mind or soul. My quick and easy definition of what the soul or mind is: our thoughts and feelings.

There are hundreds of styles of psychotherapy or counseling. Broadly speaking they can be put into four broad groups: those that emphasize our minds, those who emphasize our feelings, those which emphasize our relationship and those which emphasize our physical.

Classical therapy among those who emphasize our thinking is mental behavior therapy. It is believed that the way of thinking intellectual processing and that the way we think influences our feelings and behavior. Therefore, this therapy is to change our minds and become happier and/or more productive.

Rogers is very good at listening to hear the emotion in what others are saying and respond to them. It may sound simple – a few minutes of trying to do this would indicate otherwise. This therapy is to listen to the feelings of others and ourselves.

There are a large number of therapies that focus on our relationship. They can reverse the way you relate to one or more people in your life at the moment and examine what changes to your style of relating would lead to greater satisfaction for you.
